The Department of Energy has extended the deadline for eligible Tribes to apply for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program

April 2, 2024

The Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program is designed to assist states, local governments, and Tribes in implementing strategies to reduce energy use, to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and to improve energy efficiency. Recently, the application deadline for eligible Tribes has been extended from April 30, 2024 to May 31, 2025. Applications for states and local governments are still due April 30, 2024.

To confirm that your state, local government, or Tribe is eligible for an EECBG Program formula award and determine your allocation amount, click on the following categories:

Eligible activities range from strategy development to clean energy deployment and funds can be used community-wide; not just for government buildings and facilities. Governments can fund clean energy projects or launch clean energy programs. Tribes can use EECBG Program funds to upgrade buildings, install renewable energy equipment, or develop climate and clean energy plans.

There are two ways to apply for the EECBG. States, local governments, or Tribes can apply for a grant or local governments and Tribes can apply for a voucher (states are not eligible to apply for a voucher). Vouchers include technical assistance services and rebates. DOE recommends eligible local governments and Tribes receiving less than $250K consider the voucher/rebate option. To learn more about the voucher option click here. Eligible entities may apply for a voucher or a grant, but not both.

Additionally, the DOE has put together an EECBG Program Formula Grant Application Hub with how to apply for the formula awards. Specific to Tribes, DOE has put together a EECBG Program Comprehensive Guide for Indian Tribes. In addition to the Great Lakes EJ TCTAC, the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) Tribal Environmental Justice Technical Assistance Center is also offering technical assistance for this opportunity. If interested, you can fill out the NIHB intake form here, and Great Lakes TCTAC intake form here

The DOE provides extensive opportunities for support to states, local governments, and Tribes to reduce barriers to achieving their clean energy and energy efficiency goals and maximize project impact. EECBG Program technical assistance is available via peer networks and cohort-based learning, expert assistance in problem solving, document templates, and more opportunities that help meet specific needs of individual communities. You can find technical assistance options and resources here.
